I had been dreaming of this project for several years. I had the idea but I wasn’t sure how to bring it to life. One day I decided to just do it. This took me several days to figure out how to shoot the photos with an all black background with the main subject and the mirror. I took several trips to the fabric store to get enough black cloth. In the end, I couldn’t be happier. For me, these photos say so much. We often hear, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. To me, this is where that saying comes from. These photos show so much emotion. They have so much meaning behind just what you see. To the wives, these photos represent the countless hours they worry if their husbands will come home. It represents the sleepless nights and the knowledge that the person they married will never be the same because of what they deal with every day. For the men in the photo it represents the internal struggle to sacrifice family time for others. Its the silence at night that reminds them of the evil in the world. It is the fight to be better so you come home at night. Its missed birthdays, holidays, and family gatherings because they believe in something more than themselves. These photos show selfless sacrifice. These photos show the sacrifice that is needed to bring order in a chaotic world. I will be forever grateful for those who willingly put on the uniform to protect others.
